lESS-IS-MORE PRE-WAR

Upper West Side, New York

The client sought an upgraded kitchen that maximized a tight 28 square foot area.  Solk Architecture identified this not as a kitchen renovation project, but a spatial puzzle to redistribute the available real estate to better suit modern living.  Even though new kitchen fixtures, finishes and appliances were essential, the client also lacked a work-from-home space and well organized bedroom closets.

By shifting one wall of the kitchen 10" into the bedroom, the space could accommodate full-size appliances and support a natural cooking flow.  The kitchen bump-out allowed for new built-in shelving on the bedroom side, offering character and additional storage.  The two side-by-side bedroom closets were removed and replaced with a desk and cabinet located adjacent to the kitchen.  The resulting space allowed for an ample walk-in-closet.

Pre-war apartments have a wonderfully formal flow between rooms.  This renovation broke down that rigidity to retain the original character while allowing every inch to best serve the client's needs.
